GT Innovation 2025 –
Research and Development of Table Tennis Rackets Using Nano Cellulose

■ Research Background

To deliver innovative products that exceed the expectations of players in the table tennis racket market,
Goziptong has launched a new development project focusing on table tennis blades that apply nano cellulose.

Nano cellulose is a material produced by breaking cellulose down to the nanoscale.
It offers outstanding mechanical strength, light weight, and chemical stability,
which makes it highly promising for use in sports equipment.

This research aims to apply the advantages of nano cellulose
to table tennis blade construction,
so that we can provide players with top-tier performance
while also contributing to a sustainable sports culture.

■ Research Objective

The primary objective of this study is to utilize the unique properties of nano cellulose
to improve the structural strength of table tennis blades
and enhance their overall performance.

Furthermore, by using eco-friendly materials,
we seek to reduce environmental impact
and explore ways to minimize the ecological footprint
generated during the manufacturing process of table tennis blades.

■ Research Methods

● Material Study
Analyze the properties of nano cellulose
and develop processing methods that optimize it
for use in table tennis blade construction.

● Product Design
Design blade compositions based on nano cellulose,
and optimize performance for different playing styles.

● Performance Testing
Provide the developed blades to table tennis players
and evaluate their performance in real match conditions.

● Environmental Impact Assessment
Assess the environmental impact of the production process
for nano cellulose–based blades,
and explore ways to improve and reduce that impact.

■ Expected Effects

Table tennis blades that incorporate nano cellulose
are expected to offer greater durability and lower weight
compared to conventional blades.

This will enable players to react faster and more accurately,
directly contributing to performance improvement in matches.

In addition, an eco-friendly manufacturing process
will support the sustainable development of the sports equipment industry,
and serve as an important milestone in exploring
the many possibilities of nano cellulose.

■ Conclusion

Goziptong’s research on nano cellulose table tennis blades
will verify the feasibility of applying innovative materials
to sports equipment
and introduce sustainable manufacturing methods,
presenting a new paradigm in the sports industry.

This research is expected to attract great interest
not only from table tennis players
but also from environmentally conscious consumers worldwide.

● What is Cellulose?

Cellulose is a polysaccharide composed of long linear chains
of hundreds to thousands of D-glucose units
linked by β(1→4) glycosidic bonds.
Its general chemical formula is (C₆H₁₀O₅)ₙ,
and it is an organic compound.

Cellulose forms a key structural component
of the primary cell walls of green plants,
various types of algae, and oomycetes.
Some types of bacteria also secrete cellulose
to form biofilms.

Cellulose is the most abundant organic compound on Earth.
Plants produce on the order of 10¹⁴ kg of cellulose every year,
making it the single most plentiful organic substance on the planet.

  • Cotton fibers contain about 90% cellulose,

  • wood typically contains 40–50%,

  • and dried hemp contains around 57% cellulose.

Cellulose is used primarily in the production of paper and cardboard.
Smaller quantities are converted into various derivatives
such as cellophane and rayon.
Converting cellulose from energy crops
into cellulosic ethanol and other biofuels
is under development as a source of renewable energy.
Industrial cellulose is mainly obtained
from wood pulp and cotton fiber.

Some animals—especially ruminants and termites—
can digest cellulose with the help of symbiotic microorganisms
such as bacteria and protozoa (e.g., Trichonympha) living in their guts.

In humans, cellulose is an indigestible component
of insoluble dietary fiber.
It acts as a hydrophilic bulking agent in the stool
and can help promote bowel movements.

By mechanically stimulating the walls of the intestine during digestion,
cellulose encourages the secretion of lubricating fluids,
helping the passage of waste.

Cellulose that functions in this way
is often referred to as dietary fiber.
